When it comes to installing CCTV cameras around a commercial premises, it is completely different to domestic use and what you do with the footage. When you are using surveillance cameras and capture people entering or leaving a building, this is considered personal data and as a business owner you need to protect this.
Around your premises you must display signage that says CCTV in use or simple signs that say CCTV. You must carefully decide who images and footage is disclosed to as is this gets into the wrong hands it could end in disaster. You must also make regular checks with your staff to ensure they are following the correct procedure as personal data is being collected.
The public do have a right to see CCTV footage that has been taken and they feature on. From when a member of the public or your customers asks for the footage, you have 30 days to provide it to them.
You must not disclose any images of individuals to unauthorised members of the public or to the media.
